about

"The Relative Band is an ongoing contemporary music project featuring musicians from different musical (jazz, rock, classical etc) and cultural (Australian and international) backgrounds.
Each time The Relative Band performs/tours, the group contains a new line-up of musicians who spontaneously interact through the process of improvisation to make a music that exists only for those particular performances in time and location. The music of The Relative Band consequently does not have a set style - its character depends on who is in the group at the time. Most musicians invited to perform, however, are usually internationally respected and are regarded as innovators in their individual fields of activity.
Celebration, theatre, humour and dance seem to occur very often at Relative Band concerts, marking a radical change from the 'severity' of many contemporary music concerts. The Band aims to make 'creative' music of the highest quality in a way which is unique but, above all, enjoyable and entertaining. Our audiences too are not 'stylised' and The Relative Band has no difficulty communicating with people from many different backgrounds, country and urban (the 1984 tour went to Ballarat, Geelong, Wagga Wagga, Penrith and Wollongong as well as Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra)."

Also included here as a bonus item is a rare 8-page booklet produced for the Relative Band tour the following year in 1985
